Asano Kanezane. Well known smith of the Showa era. Showa stamp denotes blade made prior to 1942. Kanezane was a Mino Seki smith who was featured in both Slough's book “Modern Japanese Sword Makers 1868-1945”(pgs 76-79) and Fuller and Gregory’s Military Swords of Japan 1868-1945 (pgs 111-112, 118). He worked his entire life in Seki and won numerous awards and medals for sword-making at the Fine Arts Exhibition between 1934 and 1942. Blade is signed “Noshu ju Asano Kanezane saku kore,” and has the showa stamp as well as the sane kokuin which is the smith’s personal seal. On the back of the tang, the numbers “shichi shi san ichi,” (7431) are written in paint. There is one chip out of the blade but it does not go very deep into the hamon. The blade is scuffed but there is no rusting or pitting. This will be a great candidate for a full polish( the tip is intact). This is most likely a showato blade by a well known smith. This smith made blades for Seki out of Tokyo. This later came to an end when the factories stopped using smiths and signatures on swords; those after, being numbered and stamped out as fast as they could make them. This is a truly great looking sword worthy of conversation with plenty of print on the smith available. This is a real great katana for a collection or just a war enthusist!
