This is a beautiful Japanese red and black lacquerware 5 drawer stacking unit! You can see the Ginseng motif on the top cover and on each of the 4 sides of the 5 drawers with the mother of pearl embellishment on the top and around top and bottom of each drawer. We don't know if this is a sewing box, Bento Box or Picnic box or what to actually call it. This belonged to a friend of my mother's and my mother purchased it for a gift for me from her estate. We know her husband was in the military over seas in the early 1940's so presume that was when it was purchased. We have tried to do considerable research on it and have only been told it is 1920-1940 Japanese lacquerware. I saw one similar to it on an on line antique auction 7 or 8 years ago with a different design & it was called a Japanese Bento Box & sold for $1,250.00. It was filled with vintage laces, buttons, trims and sewing supplies when I received it. It is being sold empty. T are a few pieces of the mother of pearl embellishment missing as you can see in the pictures. One drawer has a small crack across the bottom. What appears to be flaws in the other drawers is only the glare of my camera & lighting. The 3 letter insignia on the bottom is
