Japanese Art and Culture book Hagi Yaki - Hagi Ceramics Used mainly for tea ceremony, Hagi yaki is a highly valued earthenware. Hagi kilns begun as the official clan kilns after the Daimyo Mouri established his headquarters in Hagi region in 1604. Size variations and color differences occur in Hagi yaki due to its manual firing process. It usually contains cracks, known as Kannyu, in its foundation. This gives properties of ventilation and water permeability to the base material. One of the charms of Hagi ware is the accumulation of tea in the cracks through use, resulting in subtle visual changes to the surface. The importance of Hagi Yaki is demonstrated in ancient tea ceremony sayings such as: "One Raku, Two Hagi, Three Karatsu", and "The seven changes of Hagi".
