Rare Hagi-yaki Japanese Sake Cup – Bajyo Hai (Cup for Horse Riding) A Hagi-yaki sake bajyo hai cup from Showa Era [1926-1989].I found a funny-shaped Hagi sake cup. This kind of cup, with long kodai (foot), is called bajyo hai (literally bajyo means “on the horse” and hai means “cup”). As the name shows, the cup is made with consideration of drinking sake during a horse ride. Regarding that horses were the major form of transportation in old days and samurai warriors had to move long distances as quickly as possible, it is understandable that this style of cup, which is originally from China, was then produced in Japan. You will find a small hole on the kodai – yes, like you might have just guessed, this is a hole for string used to hang the cup from neck.In contrast to the image of roughness from the word of bajyo hai, the colouring is very delicate and peaceful. It changes from snowy-gray to beautiful cherry blossom colour pink. The edging of kodai , though, gives a taste of roughness. Interesting combination between colour and shape. It has a stamp impression of a potter on the long kodai. Hagi (now Yamaguchi Prefecture) is the home of Hagi-yaki read more
