We have received, on consignment for auction, a small collection of Catholic miniature alabaster carvings encased in sterling and glass; this auction will benefit several Carmelite Convents we work with in South America . We will provide their provenance to the winning bidders upon request. These carvings were done behind convent walls by Carmelite nuns for their patrons as gifts. They were often painted in the presence of the actual Image (a statue or painting), and as such (according to some Catholic regional traditions), they are considered relics. Each miniature carving in the collection has been encased in sterling silver and protective glass, and are made to be worn. The lenght of this reliquary (not counting the bale) is 2 inches, and it weighs 32 grams; it encases a 2 sided carved alabaster stone. The silver case is hand made, and the attention to detail on the Carvings is rarely found today at any price. This collection ended with the collectors untimely death in 1960, he was a beloved friend of Berta, the founder of Church-Woman Antiques. Good luck bidding!
