Stated First US EditionNew York: Harper & Row Publishers, 1973. First US edition. Publisher's red cloth decorated in gilt on board and spine. Very Good. No dust jacket. Strong Spine and crisp pages. Minimal wear at corners and spine ends. Some of the pages are marked with pen and pencil by previous owner. The author, J.G. Bennett, traces Gurdjieff's earliest influences, ancient Eastern prophets and religious leaders like Zoroaster, and the great Sufi teacher Khwaja Naq'shbandi. He discusses how Gurdjieff was educated by the spiritual descendants of these leaders, and how he went about establishing his groups.
