" Excellent condition" sums up this vintage " John H . Kittila III " signed open swing handle " Nantucket Lightship Basket " with interior decorative thistle floral carved scrimshaw decal/plate with a carved image of the Nantucket Island in the center. All authentic and artisan handcrafted . Very clean piece.BACKGROUND/HISTORY " Nantucket Lightship Baskets are a basket having its origin on Nantucket Islands lightship vessels dating back to the 19th century. Constructed of rattan and wood with "an odd number of staves" (wooden strips forming the shape of the basket), "a wooden base,a nailed and lashed rim". The most " traditional " woods used in their construction are pine , ash , and oak (can't say what is used here). Nantucket Lightship baskets continue to be crafted by local Nantucket Island artisans. About JOHN H. KITTILA III - born Feb. 10, 1948 died Nov. 1 , 2004 . From a line/family of Nantucket Lightship basket weavers, John III crafted/weaved his first basket in 1956, age 8 years , perfecting his craft alongside his father , John Jr throughout his school years. John III was given the distinction of being selected by the Nantucket Historical Association to make baskets aboard the Lightship from out of all the basket makers/weavers on the island.
