JUDAEA , Procurators. Pontius Pilate 26-36 CE. Æ Prutah (16mm). Struck under Tiberius, Dated RY 17 (AD 30). [TIB]ЄPIOY KAICAPOC, lituus / LIZ (date) within wreath. Meshorer 333; Hendin 649. Pontius Pilate’s date of birth is unknown. He is believed to have hailed from the Samnium region of central Italy . Pontius Pilate served as the prefect of Judaea from 26 to 36 A.D. He convicted Jesus of treason and declared that Jesus thought himself King of the Jews, and had Jesus crucified. Pilate died 39 A.D. The cause of his death remains a mystery. An artifact found in 1961 proved his existence. Sadly after many years I am selling my coin collection. Please look at some of my other items which are up now or will be soon.
