56.13 U.K. English Electric Lightning, F.3, 1/72 scale Airfix kit 02080, NIB factory sealedEngland’s first supersonic fighter, the English Electric F.1a Lightning was one of NATO’s major fighters in the 1960s. It was still in service into the 1980s, primarily with Britian’s home defenses. It had a speed of approximately 1500 mph. The Mk 6 was characterized by a new wing design, enlarged tanks increasing the lower portion of the fuselage, points for the mounting of underwing fuel tanks and other features improving the long range capabilities. The Mk 6 first flew on June 16, 1965. Later two Aden 30 mm cannon were added forward of the fuel tanks. The F Mk 1s left service in June 1988, 28 years after their introduction. Length: 16.84 m, Wingspan: 10.61 m, Engine: 5,035 kg thrust (7,394 with afterburner) Rolls-Royce Avon 302, Maximum Speed: Mach 2.2 at 12,200 m, Armament: two 30 mm Aden cannon.
