FIRST TIME OF EVERYTHING This booklet is an advertising piece for Kickapoo medicinal products including Kickapoo Indian Cough Cure, Kickapoo Soap, Indian Pills, Indian Tape-Worm Secret Remedy, Indian Oil, Kickapoo Indian Salve, and Indian Sagwa. These products variously promised to remedy rheumatism, bruises, sores, burns, sudden or acute pains, toothache, cuts, earache, colic, dysentery, sore throat, etc., etc. A few interesting quotes: Constipation means the retention of effete, vile matter in the system. It means the turning of the temple of God into a foul, stopped sewer ... The practical question now is, "What are constipated people to do? " Take Kickapoo Indian Pills. Cold is probably man's greatest enemy. The wild Indian himself feared it more than the savage animal ... Had he not known some natural remedy t would be few Indians left, but he found what is known as Kickapoo Indian Cough Cure..." Each of the several Kickapoo products advertised in this booklet promises wonderful results for all sorts of ailments. In short, if something was wrong, Kickapoo medicines could cure. This item measures approximately 5 inches wide by 7 inches tall. It contains 32 numbered pages and much of the contents is devoted to timelines and informational pieces on famous firsts. These pieces are enhanced with black and white illustrations. The rest of the book is devoted to testimonials about the wonders of Kickapoo products and warnings against serious sickness and disease. The textblock of this booklet is sturdy, complete, and legible although the pages are tanned. Both covers show a short closed tear. A couple of pages have some old hand-written notes in the margins. This booklet is in good condition on the whole.This item would appeal to anyone who collects medical advertising pieces, quack medicine items from the 19th century, or items related to the American Indian in 19th Century American culture. It is interesting to see both the information and the misinformation contained within the pages of this book.
