LOT # 10 Detailed Photos Estate Road Show L10 ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY WOODEN COOPERED FIRKIN SUGAR BUCKET Item Description We are pleased to offer this magnificent Antique Wooden Coopered Firkin or Sugar Bucket C. 1870. Old original surface, old split to lid. A Firkin is an old English Unit of Volume. The term firkin is currently used to refer to antique buckets, usually with a handle and lid. This Antique Firkin has a bentwood band swing handle that is attached to the bucket with wooden buttons and is pegged in the inside. This Antique Firkin is in very good condition and has very desirable aged appropriate patina and wear. In colonial times a cooper was a person who made leak proof wooden barrels, tubs, and pails. Coopers worked in villages, on plantations, and on ships. Barrels were used to hold food and liquids. The cooper used staves or narrow strips of wood to make a bucket. The cooper gathered staves then heated them over a small fire to make them bend. Then he pulled the staves together using a windlass tool. The lid of the bucket/firkin and the band were hand turned and then the two pieces were joined together, as the photos show. The band on the coopered firkin lid is joined with a finger overlap. This is a beautiful Early Americana Primitive Collectible.Research Consulted: Shaker Woodenware, A Field Guide, Vol. 1, June read more
