LOT # 310 Detailed Photos Estate Road Show L310 2 pc ANTIQUE WOODEN COOPERED FIRKIN SUGAR BUCKET AND LAYERED WOOD Item Description We are pleased to offer this Antique Wooden Coopered Firkin or Sugar Bucket and Lyered different woods Bowl. The bowl is newer and features stepped alternating wood pieces tightly fitted. The bucket has the old original surface. A Firkin is an old English Unit of Volume. The term firkin is currently used to refer to antique buckets, usually with a handle and lid. This Antique Firkin has a bentwood band swing handle that is attached to the bucket with wooden buttons and is pegged in the inside. This Antique Firkin is in very good condition and has very desirable aged appropriate patina and wear. In colonial times a cooper was a person who made leak proof wooden barrels, tubs, and pails. Coopers worked in villages, on plantations, and on ships. Barrels were used to hold food and liquids. The cooper used staves or narrow strips of wood to make a bucket. The cooper gathered staves then heated them over a small fire to make them bend. Then he pulled the staves together using a windlass tool. The lid of the bucket/firkin and the band were hand turned and then the two pieces were joined together, as the photos show. The band on the coopered firkin lid is joined with a finger overlap.
