LOT # 83 Detailed Photos Estate Road Show L83 RARE ORIGINAL 1903 GRAY IRON CASTING BATTLESHIP MAINE CAST IRON STILL BANK Item Description We are pleased to present this fantastic Original 1903 smaller series cast iron single stack, Battleship Maine still bank from the Gray Iron Casting Co. Grey Iron Casting was one of the classic still bank foundries, and boasted that unlike any of their competition, the Gray Iron bank slots could all accommodate a U.S. half dollar! This exact bank can be found on Page #130 / Image #1440 of Andy & Susan Moore, The Penny Bank Book, listed at $500+. The larger two stack Battleship Maine can also be seen listed at $3,500+! Our lot also contains an unidentified 6 spoke (ala Hubley, but is not) Dodge 1920s style coupe, with pronounced rusting. Grey Iron Casting Company, located in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, was founded as the Brady Machine Shop circa 1840 and rechristened as Wrightsville Hardware Company in 1881 after a fire destroyed the original location. After 21 years, Wrightsville joined the National Novelty Company (toy trust) in 1903. Both National, and the subsequently named Woodenware Manufacturing Co. failed, and the Gray Iron Casting Co. was forced to go it alone, incorporating in 1912.
