Raku Fired Pottery, Wheel Thrown Large Bowl, 4 3/4 inches tall and 11 inches in diameter. Bowl is Beautiful and shaped perfectly. Colors are copper and blues along with a vast array of colors. Piece is unique and will accent any room Piece is signed by Artist. Please read more information on Raku: Raku is an ancient ceramic technique that originated in Japan. The unusual firing method involves opening the kiln at very high temperatures, and removing the red hot pieces with tongs. the pieces are immediately placed into a metal container filled with combustible materials, such as newspaper or wood shavings. More combustibles are throw on top, and an air tight lid is put in place as quickly as possible. During the second firing the combustible materials ignite, chemically interaction with the glazes and the clay itself. The fire in the container burns all available oxygen in the clay with carbon, referred to as a reduction atmosphere. This chemical exchange give Raku pieces their characteristic black interior and trim wher glaze has not been applied. The temperature, reduction chamber atmosphere, mass of the piece, and glaze variables make Raku firing a process of intrigue, As the chamber atmosphere moves around the piece giving it its won one of a kind signature is truly what makes Raku firing exciting, each piece one at a time.
