Raku Fired Pottery, Wheel Thrown Teapot, 11 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter. Teapot is hand altered with textural designs. Colors are copper, purples pinks and blues . Please read more information on Raku: Raku is an ancient ceramic technique that originated in Japan. The unusual firing method involves opening the kiln at very high temperatures, and removing the red hot pieces with tongs. the pieces are immediately placed into a metal container filled with combustible materials, such as newspaper or wood shavings. More combustibles are throw on top, and an air tight lid is put in place as quickly as possible. During the second firing the combustible materials ignite, chemically interaction with the glazes and the clay itself. The fire in the container burns all available oxygen in the clay with carbon, referred to as a reduction atmosphere. This chemical exchange give Raku pieces their characteristic black interior and trim wher glaze has not been applied.
