Large Mahakala thangka painting with silk brocade. Overall length when hung up is ~46-1/4" from hanger to bottom hem of the brocade frame. The painting itself is 14-3/4' by 19-3/4". The widest aspect of the thangka (the bottom hem with dowel knobs) is ~31-1/2". The top edge of the brocade frame is ~26-3/4" wide. The length of the brocade frame itself is ~43". There are Tibetan letters/symbols on the back of the painting (see photos). The doweling came attached to the thangka by the maker along with the dowel ends.I purchased this thangka from Namse Bangdzo bookstore (the bookstore at KTD, the Karmapa's seat in the USA). It depicts the bent-legged form of Six armed Mahakala (as I understand it, this form of Mahakala is more associated with the Gelugpas - the Kagyu tradition utilizes the straight-legged form of Mahakala). Six armed Mahakala is considered by most to be the wrathful aspect of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig). The thangka is in excellent condition.
