This is a very exciting piece. I have handled many varied Asian pieces, but have always stayed away from baskets and carriers. This carrier/basket with arms and handle really is something special. Estimating its age to be 50-75 years old (could be older), I believe this was a "home" project for someone in China. The wood seems to be either oak or maple. The bottom of this piece has been cut from an old wooden barrel with two brass rings of metal around it. T are Chinese letters on the bottom (see picture). The arms are completely hand cut and finished, then it seems glued to the bottom of the barrel. Then, the arms are attached to the center wooden handle with both glue and strips of brass attached with brass nails. Even the strips of brass are hand cut! The center handle is engraved with pleasant designs. On top of the wooden handle is a brass handle with a two-headed dog or dragon design. It is a solid strong piece which was probably used to carry vegetables, fruit, or fish to the table, and served right from it! The metal finishings have never been polished, and the wooden parts have only been wiped clean, never refinished. It measures approx. 14 3/4" in diameter, and stands approx. 14" high to the top of the brass handle. It does not need any type of repair, and actually could be used if so desired!
