Large Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery by Chris Martinez - Avanyu / Water Serpent Product Description Large Blackware Santa Clara pottery by artist Chris Martinez. This piece measures 11 1/4" tall and has a diameter of approximately 11" at its widest point. This large vase was hand coiled, carved and polished by Chris Martinez, a Santa Clara artist in New Mexico. Chris has become proficient in making large vases such as this one. He was taught by his late grandmother Flora Naranjo, mother Barbara Martinez and his sister Vickie Martinez all of whom have influenced his work and helped him become a very talented artist. This piece is an Avanyu, or water serpent vase. Around the girth of the piece is a large serpent which was carved out and encicles the entire piece. The neck of the vase was decorated with a beautiful eagle feather design which stretches from the rim to the top of the serpent. The carvings are very impressive and cut deeply and evenly into the clay. The eagle feather design and the serpent both are very detailed and well done. The piece itself is symmetric and has a wonderful shape to it. It is balanced and sits nicely on any flat surface. It is in excellent condition; free of scuffs, scratches, chips or cracks. It is signed on the bottom by Chris. Feel free to contact me with any questions. inkfrog terapeak i000000 Analyzing read more
