Victorian Silver Buffalo Merit Jewel 1887 LOAB Manchester Banner Top quality silver gilt Buffalo Merit jewel. The jewel is 62 mm diameter and has a gilt buffalo head in the centre. It is suspended from a gilt pair of buffalo horns with Queen Victoria crown and inscribed: MERIT The top clasp is enamelled Leicester District Lodge No 1. Hanging pin missing from top clasp. The ribbon has a gilt shield engraved: LOAB. The reverse is engraved with a presentation: LOAB MANCHESTER BANNER LEICESTER DISTRICT LODGE NO 1. PRESENTED TO PCP CHARLES DEXTER ON HIS RETIRING FROM THE GRAND PRIMO CHAIR MAR 10 1887. The jewel reflects two aspects of the historical evolution of the RAOB: 1 Divisions within the Order led to break-ups and the Grand Lodge of England, formed in 1866, fractured into smaller 'Banners' This jewel is Manchester Banner. 2 The Seditious and Riotous Assembly Acts of the late 19th century affected the gatherings of clubs throughout Britain. To overcome this issue and show the Buffaloes were not subversive to the interest of the state, the Order described itself as the "Loyal Order of Buffaloes"'. The word "loyal" was often mispronounced as royal , and soon stuck. Silver hallmarks for London 1886 (L) and makers initials AR. Total weight 64.3 grams. Interesting early example.
