Vintage ST. RITA OF CASCIA Chalkware Statue This lovely statue of St. Rita measures 16" high by 4" wide by 2" deep. I believe this was once part of a wall shrine, since the back of the figure is hollow. However, from the front, it appears solid. In the interest of full disclosure, I have included a scan of the back. Saint Rita was born Rita Lotti in Umbria, Italy in 1386, and died on May 22, 1457 of tuberculosis at the Augustinian convent at Cascia. From her early youth, Rita visited the Augustinian nuns at Cascia and showed a deep interest in religious life. However, when she was twelve, her parents betrothed her to Paolo Mancini, an ill-tempered and abusive man. Disappointed but obedient, Rita married him when she was 18, and became the mother of twin sons. She endured Paolo's abuses for eighteen years before he was ambushed and stabbed to death. Upon the deaths of her sons, Rita once again felt the call to religious life. She was admitted to the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalen at age 36. She lived for 40 years in the convent, spending her time in prayer and charity, and working for peace in the region. She was devoted to the Passion, and in response to a prayer to suffer as Christ, she received a chronic head wound which appeared to be caused by a Crown of Thorns. This wound bled for 15 years.
