Liquidating an Estate - Pair of uncirculated 1883 "V" Liberty Head Nickels These coins have a very interesting history. The earlier "No Cents" version only used the letter "V" to denote the denomination. Scam artists noted that the coin looked similar to a $5 gold coin. Some were plated with gold and passed off as being worth $5 - which in 1883 could buy a lot more than the Starbucks coffee it could buy today. The US Mint quickly changed the design and added the word "Cents" to the coin. These two coins were both labeled as being Mint State (Uncirculated) coins. Looking closely at the photos it is possible the "No Cents" coin shows signs of a die crack. I am no expert on grading coins so I've provided high resolution photos. Both coins have good eye appeal and it is hard to believe they are 130 years old. You don't often see these sold as a matching pair - a pair that tells a story. This will be a true auction - low starting price and no reserve. Thanks for looking and good luck with your bidding. You will not be disappointed with these nice coins
