Up for bid is this very nice M1874 French Gras Rifle Bayonet. The Gras Rifle was manufactured en masse by the French over a period of about twelve years. During this time about 400,000 rifles were produced, and this is the bayonet that was manufactured to fit this 11 mm caliber black powder centerfire cartridge single-shot weapon. This bayonet is in great condition. The spring action still functions (see the last photo,) and the blade is in great shape with no rust. The walnut grip is also and brass pommel are also in excellent shape. This bayonet was manufactured in Chateaux on December 9th, 1877 as the engraving on the side indicates (see photos.) The serial number, 98511, is engraved in both the scabard and blade, indicating the scabard is the original scabard produced for this bayonet. The weapon is about 26" from the tip of the blade to the tip of the pommel. Item ships with original scabbard.Good luck on your bid! The auction includes what's pictured.
