Magnificent Gurunsi Plank Mask Length: 48 inches. Width: 13 inches, Depth: 9 inches Wood, Paint/Pigment, Resin Circa Mid 20th Century A French/USA Collection Estimate: $1500+ ( Might be the last time on Ebay. Every summer I send pieces to my art broker in Santa Fe. If you are interested, buy or make an offer.) DESCRIPTION Superb zoomorphic Gurunsi(Winiama) plank mask, mid 20thC. Elegant artistic form and execution. Signs of age and use, which include: past insect damage in several areas with worm holes that run laterally and zigzag through the wood, not straight as in man-made holes; heat exposure on the bottom, as these masks are exposed to kitchen or communal fires; varied wear on inside of mask-cheek and face areas; also, the attachment holes are irregular and appear to be pulled forward. Very good provenance. FEATURES Typical and stylistically correct features: plank masks of the Gurunsi tend to be shorter and broader than those of their neighbors, the Mossi and BWA. Large open lozenge-shaped mouth with angular corners; broad lips and barred teeth; high-hooked nose; large eyes in raised concentric circles covered by geometric patterns, especially incised triangles painted in red, black and white. Mask surmounted by three female figures. See "African Masks, from the Barbier-Mueller collection" for another pic of a Gurunsi read more
