This majolica butter pat plate is done In the lily pond design. It is unattributed. These are very hard to find as they were sort of the first to be broken because of their size. This pat has some very small flea bite chips on the side of the dish and you can see some very faint utensil wear on the inside of the plate which means it was really used as a butter pat! I think in many ways this is brilliant, you wonder whose table was it on? It is in good condition. If you are new to collecting majolica you should know there is a leaded glaze on these items and they are not suitable for serving dishes for food. The potters of the time did not know this and in some instances people became ill. In the time they were made they were used for serving dishes in many cases in the most elegant households. Now they are art, and are history. In the Victorian era, with the publishing of Darwin's Book, there was a celebration of new thinking and this created the majolica craze of the majolica pottery as a tribute to nature. This lasted a little after the turn of the 20th century when demand subsided. Majolica does date back to very early days of the 1600's in Italy and Portugal, However these items are very difficult to find and are rarely marked.
