MARK MCGWIRE SIGNED BASEBALL W/ "583 HR" INSCRIPTION Prev Stop Play Next Mark McGwire signed this baseball during the 2012 season while he was the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. He inscribed his career total “583 HR”, making this an extremely rare item! The Oakland A’s drafted McGwire in the first round (10th overall) in the 1984 MLB Draft. During his rookie season in 1987, McGwire hit .289 with 49 HR’s and 118 RBI’s, unanimously winning the AL Rookie of the Year Award. His 49 home runs are the most by any player in major league history during their rookie season. McGwire played in Oakland from 1986-1997 and established himself as one of the best players in baseball. Over that time frame with Oakland, he made 9 all-star games and led the A’s to a World Series Championship in 1989. During the 1997 season, McGwire was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. He led the majors with 58 home runs in 1997 and signed a contract extension to remain in St. Louis. The 1998 season was one of the most memorable seasons in MLB history. Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr., and Sammy Sosa were all on pace to break Roger Maris’ single season home run record. On September 8, 1998, Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run of the season, breaking Maris’ record. Sammy Sosa finished the season with 66 home runs and Ken Griffey Jr. finished with 56. McGwire finished his career with the Cardinals in 2001. McGwire hit 583 home runs in his career, the 10th most of any player in major league baseball history. He participated in 12 all-star games, won the AL Rookie of the Year Award in 1987, won a gold glove award in 1990, and won two World Series (1989, 2011 as Cardinals hitting coach) throughout his incredible major league career.
