Martin Luther " CHRISTMAS " Limited Edition Collectible Plate This is one of a limited edition of 1250 fine porcelain plates created especially for Aid Association of Lutherans. Collector Year 1976 China 10 1/2" with 2 thin gold bands on inner and outer rim I have another plate in this series up for auction as well. It is the "BAPTISM" plate for 1979. The back reads: CHRISTMAS "Oh, we poor men that we should be so cold and indifferent to this great joy which has been given us. This indeed is the greatest gift (the Christ Child", which far exceeds that which God has created." - Martin Luther One of the popular legends about the Christmas tree is that Luther, impressed by the beauty of the stars twinkling through frosty boughs of the fir trees, cut one, brought it home and lighted it with candles. In this illustration of that story, Luther and his son arrive at the Katherinen Portal, a doorway carved from sandstone and given to Luther by his wife, Katherine , as a birthday anniversary gift in 1540. The picture on the wall, used to enhance the theme, is a Nativity, by Lucas Cranach, and now is in Dahlen museum in Berlin. Thomas M. Dietrich, artist emeritus at Lawrence University, was commissioned by Aid Association for Lutherans, Appleton, WI (Wisconsin), to do a group of paintings about Martin Luther, his times, and doctrine. read more
