Exquisite Mary Gregory Black Amethyst Glass Powder Jar/Box with Brass Rim and Hinged Lid 1880-1930s Beautifully hand painted detailed figure of a little girl walking along a path scattering bird seed while a hungry robin waits in earnest in nearby brush. Floral garland encircles the outer rim along the center of the bottom jar. This antique dresser / powder, jewelry, or trinket box has shelf wear on the bottom consistent with age. We believe this to be an extremely old example. It appears to be made from the 1880-1930s. It does not seem to have been made by Westmoreland Glass Company, Fenton Glass, or any of the other later manufacturers . Measurements are: 4 3/4 inches wide 2 1/2 inches tall Mary Gregory is the name used for a type of glass that is easily identified. White figures were hand painted on colored glass as the decoration. The first glass known as Mary Gregory was made about 1870. The traditional story has been that the glass was made at the Sandwich Glass works in Boston by a woman named Mary Gregory. In general, all Mary Gregory was made in the United States, Bohemia, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and England. EXCELLENT CONDITION -No cracks, chips, or repairs. Good details.
