Acknowledged as the greatest master working for Doulton Lambeth during its most artistically creative period in the late 19th century, George Tinworth produced many important pieces during his lifetime, but few which can compare with this massive and early example of his skill. This vase has Tinworth's initials on the body of the vase, as well as marks on the bottom that include the Doulton Lambeth mark with the date 1877 as well as the initials for Tinworth's assistant, Eliza L. Hubert, who worked at the factory from 1876 to 1884.The vase measures an astonishing 18 1/2 inches tall, approximately 7 inches at its widest point, 5 1/2 inches at its mouth, and 4 inches at its base. The colors are exceptionally beautiful and, to my mind, very much reflect the Moorish artistic tradition which strongly influenced many Doulton potters at the time this vase was made.The vase does have an old professional repair to its neck, which I have tried to illustrate in photos 7 through 10. While the repair and repainting of the piece is still visible to the naked eye, I believe that it was relatively well done and does little to affect the overall significance of a Tinworth vase of this size and quality. There is also a small rough spot on the body of the vase, measuring about 1/4 inch in diameter, that appears to lie on top of the glaze, but this read more
