It is named after the small village of Juan MATA ORTIZ, Chihuahua (Mexico), only a few miles from w I was born. During the mid 1970's Master Potter Juan Quezada ignited one of the most Creative Revolutions to evolve in the 20th Century. Old Pottery schards found during a nearby archaeological find unleashed the DNA-Creativity in Quezada and many of the other natives of Mata Ortiz of which their ancestors had left behind Unlike Native American potters, Mata Ortiz artist are not confined to stylistic traditions. Rather MATA ORTIZ Potters have had the Unique Ability to follow any successful tangent, in whatever direction the artist feels inspired to explore.
