Matson Lines: Three spectacular LURLINE menus from a February 1952 voyage featuring the artwork of Eugene Savage (1883-1978). In the late 1930s Matson commissioned Savage to paint nine murals depicting Hawaiian life and history. War interrupted plans to install the murals onboard, but instead Matson used them for menu covers. Today the murals belong to the Smithsonian. Savage was known for his historical accuracy and careful attention to detail. He was influenced by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, as can be seen here. The covers are called "Festival of the Sea", "Pomp and Circumstance", and "Hawaii's Decisive Hour". A description of each scene is included inside the menu. Today Savage's artwork is highly prized. The menus are oversized (10.5" by 14") and are in good condition with a little bending at the edges and slight discoloration. .
