This is a hard to find brass Max Gray O Scale New York Central refrigerator car or "reefer" that has been detailed and professionally painted for historical accuracy by Bob Anson. I sold a Precision Scale Company O Scale New York Central Early Bird Fast Freight box car he also painted last week and will sell more Bob Anson painted O scale in the coming weeks. This brass New York Central box car model makes a great signature piece for display on a desk, bookshelf or a railroad collection and makes a great one of a kind gift of museum quality. This is sold as is for a display piece, parts or running on a model railroad after being serviced from this item sitting for many years as a prized model in a collection. This item is part of my friend’s extensive collection that I am selling for him and is from a smoke free home. He collects museum quality Brass Trains. He is very meticulous about his trains and this item is no different, which is illustrated in the unique detail of this model. I have bench tested the model and the model rolls in both directions. Item is new and was only test run on layout on straight track. O scale car is SOLD AS IS . This cars has metal grab irons, scale wheels with sprung trucks, kadee sprung couplers, metal grated roof walks and great rivet detail. This brass O Scale New York Central box car was made after a picture for historic accuracy and I do not have the photo he used as a reference, since I am selling this for a friend. Bob Anson replaced the original trucks with sprung trucks before painting this New York Central refrigerator car. From the car being on display, the box has been lost and is not included with this auction. History A refrigerator car (or "reefer") is a refrigerated boxcar (U.S.), a piece of railroad rolling stock designed to carry perishable freight at specific temperatures. Refrigerator cars differ from simple insulated boxcars and ventilated boxcars (commonly used for transporting fruit), neither of which are fitted with cooling apparatus. Reefers can be ice-cooled, come equipped with any one of a variety of mechanical refrigeration systems, or utilize carbon dioxide(either as dry ice, or in liquid form) as a cooling agent. Milk cars (and other types of "express" reefers) may or may not include a cooling system, but are equipped with high-speed trucks and other modifications that allow them to travel with passenger trains. During the mid-19th century, attempts were made to ship agricultural products by rail. As early as 1842, the Western Railroad of Massachusetts was reported in the June 15 edition of the Boston Traveler to be experimenting with innovative freight car designs capable of carrying all types of perishable goods without spoilage. The first refrigerated boxcar entered service in June 1851, on the Northern Railroad (New York) (or NRNY, which later became part of the Rutland Railroad. This "icebox on wheels" was a limited success since it was only functional in cold weather. That same year, the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad (O&LC) began shipping butter to Boston in purpose-built freight cars, utilizing ice for cooling. The "Ice Age" The use of ice to refrigerate and preserve food dates back to prehistoric times. Through the ages, the seasonal harvesting of snow and ice was a regular practice of many cultures. China, Greece, and Rome stored ice and snow in caves or dugouts lined with straw or other insulating materials. Rationing of the ice allowed the preservation of foods during hot periods, a practice that was successfully employed for centuries.
