Correctly restored vintage Maxey's Challenger, Jr., circa late-1940s. Produced and sold by A. L. Maxey Mfg. Co. of Burbank, California.The Maxey's Challenger, Jr. was one of the first purpose-built mite-size tether racers produced after World War II. The Challenger, Jr. complemented the Maxey's Midget Racer, a Cox Thimble Drome Champion conversion, which was also produced by Maxey in response to the growing post-war demand for relatively inexpensive tether cars. Like the Maxey's Midget Racer, the Challenger, Jr. was unique because of Maxey's selection of diesel engines to power their cars. While diesel powered tethered cars were relatively common in Europe, they were quite rare in the United States. The Challenger, Jr. was designed by Carl W. Newell, who later gained considerable fame as the designer and manufacturer of high quality fishing reels. Maxey produced the Challenger, Jr. as both a non-powered whip car, which Maxey called the "Whirl-A-Car", and as a complete powered car using an Air-O Diesel engine for power. The cars were available with die-cast aluminum bodies which were either painted or highly polished. The Air-O Diesel engine was introduced in 1947 as a .278 cid diesel variant of the pre-war Bunch .451 cid ignition engine.
