This is a Very Rare Model 5500 __UNDERLINE__ DIAL Explorer From 1964 This is one of the rarest Explorer watches and is the rarest Rolex Explorer 5500 there is, case serial number 1118XX, dating from the forth quarter of 1964 The Explorer got its name after the successful conquest of Everest in June 1953 by the combined British Forces/Royal Geographical Society expedition. Rolex were a sponsor of this expedition & loaned watches to most of its members. This has the rare dial configuration with the underline _ underneath the writing Super Precision and at the bottom of the dial it has the writing - T <25 SWISS - T <25 The Swiss is written in gold and the - T <25 - T<25 is written in Silver so is the _Underlining_ in SilverI have found out on the Internet (but i cannot confirm this is correct) that the Explorer 5500 was for the British mar Market and only was ever sold through the NAFFI (PX) in the far east to serving British officersI cannot confirm this was a Military issue thoughI have also found out on the internet that the reason for the _Underlining_ and the - T <25 - T<25 It was most probable that Rolex around 1963/64 Scripted some of their dials with this type of writing to indicate that the Dial markers and Luminous Hands was not the old type Radium read more
