Though not my area of expertise some online research leads me to believe this style of kit was 1st produced for the US Army in WWI, and issued for unit marking tasks. The block included with the kit had recesses for the round WWI style personal ID tag, metal can handle, cup, knife + fork & spoon handle. Each kit also contained a Bronze mallet and came with a full suite of number and letter steel stamps, that all in a neatly fitted 3" X 4" X 8" solid wood block box. After 1942 the transition to oval dogtags the have a machine cut stamps in a fraction large font and the block would not have the WWI style round tag recess. The top of these O.D. green painted boxes are marked in Black Stencil letters "MARKING OUTFIT FOR STAMPING METAL" and make for an interesting display item that could also be useful around the shop. This is an old "serif" style Letter & Number kit that comes with a Bronze Block (has a 1-3/8" recesses for the round WWI style personal ID tag, meatcan (mess kit handle), + knife, fork & spoon handle), a one piece Bronze (Brass) Mallet, and a brass Thumb Screw to secure the flat spring steel work holding clips to the block. In the open area the right of the block is a paper label that shows the correct layout for lettering a WWI style Dog Tag or personal equipment tags.
