This is a mint, unused, pair of original U.S. Army trouser suspenders for use with WWII paratrooper or mountain troop pants. This pair of suspenders was taken from an original bundle of 10 pairs of suspenders, having a tag dated September 15, 1944. They are in perfect, mint condition and have been in storage since the Fall of 1944. They were intended for use in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) but remained unissued and unused. ********** The suspenders are made of OD cotton web. They have elastic tabs on the back at the bottom, with button holes for attaching to the back of the trousers. On the front, they have a set of straps that attach to the trouser buttons on the front of the trouser waistband. These straps, with two button holes, can be moved up and down to adjust for size. The suspenders have a single stock number (73-S-73000) because they are adjustable and thus are considered to be a universal size. The specification number (Spec. PQD 247C) indicates a modification from earlier styles of paratrooper suspenders (Spec. PQD 247, issued in 1942, which had adjusting buckles for the length of the suspenders and metal tabs for the buttons, and Spec. PQD 247A, issued in spring of 1943, which had leather buttonhole tabs and adjusting buckles -- I haven't been able to find out yet what modifications came with Spec. PQD 247 B.) ******** This style of trouser suspenders was preferred by Airborne and Mountain troops because they held up the heavily-laden paratroooper or ski pants better than a trouser belt alone. However, they were also used on the standard wool combat trousers, and could be worn with any pair of pants having buttons inside the waist band. This would include the M1943 (M-43) cotton twill pants, which began to be issued in large numbers to soldiers in the ETO in 1944 as part of the new M43 uniform which included the M43 field jacket and the double-buckle boots. Many of these suspenders were worn by troops in the ETO during the winter of 1944-45. This pair of suspenders, made in September of 1944, easily could have arrived in Europe in time to have been issued to troops fighting in Belgium, France, and Germany during the Battle of the Bulge. They would be appropriate for an ETO U.S. infantry or airborne uniform impression or display for any time period from the Fall of 1944 to the end of the war. Thus would be appropriate for an impression for the 17th Airborne (Operation Varsity) or 82nd or 101st Airborne (Market Garden, Battle of the Bulge). No doubt they were also issued and used in other theaters as well. ********* Guaranteed original, not a reproduction. In pristine, mint condition, could not be improved upon.
