Original Hasui (1883 - 1957) Japanese Woodblock print Miyajima in the Snow, 1930 Beautiful, rare Hasui prints- In 1930 the Haibara Fan Shop in Tokyo commissioned Hasui to create a beautiful set of 12 prints to be published by the Kato Publisher. In keeping with their status as a fan shop, the prints were presented in folders with a fan shaped window through which one could view Hasui's work. To fit the fan motif, and as an interesting departure from Hasui's normal oban format, the prints were designed in the square "shikishiban" format (9 3/4" x 9 1/2"). The resulting set of 12 prints was a beautiful addition to Hasui's artistic works. The various scenes were created in Hasui's recognizable style but are print images rarely seen on the market. Haibara intended that these Hasui prints would be rare collector's items and directed that they would be printed in a strictly limited edition of 200 sets. The print sets were very well-received and immediately sold out to serious collectors. Due to the popularity and high acclaim of this series, after Hasui's death, his daughter commissioned a second edition strictly limited to 200 prints. As collectors knew that the original prints were almost never found in the market, this second limited edition sold out immediately, also. This is important to note as, unfortunately, the original first edition release of this set are, more often then not, "mat burned" with a fan shaped stain over the subject from the original acidic 1930s folders. Our prints are in the second edition folders which are made of the cotton rag material and have not affected the prints in any way. Comments- The beautiful, famous torii at Miyajima in wintertime. The contrast of the winter snow, water, and red torii gate shows Miyajima at its most picturesque.
