Model 1905-06 Experimental Cavalry SaberThe Chief of Ordnance ordered the manufacture of 1,039 of these experimental âeoecut & thrustâe cavalry sabers for enlisted men and 157 sabers for officers. They were to be manufactured at Springfield Armory. However, in actuality, many were apparently manufactured by Ames Sword company, as numerous surviving examples show. This saber is marked, âeoeA.S. CO / Flaming Ordnance Bomb / 1906 - U.S.âe on approx. 30 inch steel clip point blade. Both blade, sheet steel guard and pommel are nickel plated, like the 1902 Saber For All Officers, which was being manufactured at Springfield at the same time. Ord. records indicate three blade lengths were available, 28âe, 30âe, and 32âe. The shorter length was for use by foot officers. The two longer lengths for use by mounted troops and officers. Records are incomplete as to variations and how many sabers were actually manufactured and by whom, Springfield and Ames.
