Model 1905-06 Experimental Cavalry SaberThe Chief of Ordnance ordered the manufacture of 1,039 of these experimental âeoecut & thrustâe cavalry sabers for enlisted men and 157 sabers for officers. They were to be manufactured at Springfield Armory. However, in actuality, many were apparently manufactured by Ames Sword company, as numerous surviving examples show. This saber is marked, âeoeA.S. Ord. records indicate three blade lengths were available, 28âe, 30âe, and 32âe. The shorter length was for use by foot officers. The two longer lengths for use by mounted troops and officers. Records are incomplete as to variations and how many sabers were actually manufactured and by whom, Springfield and Ames. (See; âeoeTHE LAST BRIGHT BLADESâe by Joseph William Turner) The underside of the guard is clearly stamped, âeoeA 9 CAV. / 71âe. The walnut grip is sharkskin wrapped and twisted wire intact. Wrap shows wear-thru along the high areas, demonstrating the fact that this sword was used and carried extensively, however, is not objectionable. The steel scabbard is completely wrapped with russet
