MTH Premier O-Scale Canadian Pacific Rail (CP Rail) Corrugated Auto Carrier, Red vertical posts and Silver aluminum sheeting resting on a Yellow flat car w/White lettering and Reporting Marks. Yellow base showing TTX ownership markings and Trailer Train, Red supporting ribs and Silver-Aluminum corrugated sheeting in between and roof, Red ends and the "CP Rail" Banner. This paint scheme adds to your existing "Auto-Carrier" consist. Car No. TTGX #977073 Built in the 1970s. The 1st and 4th picture are of the model while the last picture is of a gathering of corrugated auto carriers in the "Pig's Eye" freight yard. Other pictures show Canadian Pacific locomotives attached to corrugated auto racks. The number of corrugated autorack cars in a train can be used as a gauge of the health of the economy. While I was in Brunswick MD there is a parking lot for MARK commuter trains to Washington DC and a 17 line switching yard with 2 through lines on the far side and 2 through lined on the near side. These 4 through lines condensed down to 2 through lines at the end of the switch yard toward Washington DC. I would notice that there were 2 or more trains of 89 or so autoracks late evening and late night and often 1 in the morning. During the day these trains would make their way as empties back through Brunswick to Cumberland and on to Chicago and eventually to be filled in Detroit or Flint MI. But back to the story, when the economy was doing poorly, the trains would have as few as 50 autoracks in the consist. But when the economy spurred up again, the 89 or 92 cars would be in a consist. While some form of freight car has been used to haul autos by train since virtually the first Model-T rolled off the assembly line in early 20th century, it wasn’t until the 1960s that railroads began developing a car tailored to move only automobiles. As the design was refined over the years today what you have is essentially a specialized, completely enclosed flat car that features two or three levels of racks to transport vehicles (many of which feature TTX or Trailer Train Corporation [originally a Pennsylvania Railroad company] markings, a leader in the distribution of COFC, TOFC, and autoracks). From the turn of the 20th century through roughly the 1960s railroads hauled most of their merchandise traffic (i.e., virtually everything that was not bulk material like coal or aggregates) using the ubiquitous boxcar. What made boxcars great, at least in the eyes of the railroads, was, their ability to haul about anything! Railroads thrive on redundancy to maximize efficiency, which was the reason they loved the boxcar so much (if it was not for shippers who requested many different specialized cars for their needs, railroads would have been happy to haul everything inboxcars). For instance, for many years the car carried everything from general consumer goods to fresh produce, literally almost anything that would practically fit into the car’s empty, open spaces.
