Title: Early 18th Century Bishop Saint Sculpture Date/Era/Period: Early 18th Century Grade: Very Fine Condition: see pictures Origin: Spain Overall Size: 40cm tall Comments: This is a stunning sculpture from the Spanish Baroque period, it is a Bishop Saint , perhaps Saint Augustine but we are unsure, the book in his hand is a clue, but we´ve found references to various bishop sdaints portrayed with books. The sculpture is very finely carved with applied gesso, polychrome painted and beautifully decorated with high quality gilding. The sculpture also has beautiful glass eyes which are brown but the outer line is blue, quite interesting and unusual. It is a piece from southern spain.
