You are looking at a rare MediumOctahedrite (IIICD) with metallic and silicate inclusions Meteorite from the Lihu and Yaozhai towns, Nandan County , Guanxi Province , China . The specimen is over one Billion years old and fell in 1516 (recognised as a Meteorite in 1958). The specimen measures 31mm x 29mm x 13mm and weighs 18gms. The Nantan meteorite fell in 1516 as recorded in ancient Chinese texts. The fireball exploded during descent which resulted in the shower of many individual iron meteorites over an area 28km x 8km in Nandan County , Guangxi , China . Classified as an iron meteorite; 111CD Course Octohedrite, this meteorite is approximately 92% iron, 6% nickel and contains more than ten minerals including Kamacite, Taenite, Dominate, Plessite, Scheribersite, Triolite, Graphite and others. The Nantan meteorite, along with all other iron meteorites known to science, formed during the formation of the Solar System some 4.5 billion years ago. They are certain to have originated from the Asteroid Belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, representing the debris from the formation of the rocky planets. Disrupted by the gravitational pulls of the Sun and Jupiter, asteroids would often collide sending debris on an eventual collision course with Earth. Check out my other items !
