Vintage Nantucket Lightship Basket in true Classic Flawless Condition Very detailed Scrimshaw of "Old Brant Point Lighthouse" on lid - Historic scrimshawn scene is titled below the Lighthouse in scroll "Nantucket" - Perfect condition !We purchased this lovely heirloom July 2007 and it is also dated 2007, Nantucket, Mass.Retail at the time in 2007 was $395.00This lovely piece has been displayed under glass, out of direct sunlight, smoke free, and then properly wrapped and stored for moving. We also are listing... a second RARE Nantucket with Double Scrimshaw scenes and Carving is also listed from our family's collection at this time and is also shown above in the gallery with the Island Flowers on the outside lid and Carved Scallops surrounded by Island Flowers on the inside lid.... also a very rare and beautiful piece!Valued @ $400 - WITH NO RESERVE - What you bid is what you will pay. Also a rare Nantucket which has a historic scrimshaw work of Old Nantucket Towne's Whale Industry Circa 1850 when Nantucket was home to some of the finest Whaling Ships (and crews) ever to sail the seas. The detailed and historically correct Scrimshaw adds extra beauty and value to this wonderful piece of east coast tradition and history is listed from our Family's Collection. With traditional Island weave, hand-worked leather hinges, Swing handle is steam-bent and ALL is in perfect condition. Americans Cup / Louis Vuitton Cup Team BMW ORACLE Yacht and Team America3 Nantucket Lightship Basket Historic Whaling Scene Scrimshaw This is considered a "Standard or Classic size Nantucket" at approx. 8" oval wide x 8+" high/deep and about 7.5" deep front to back (all without handle measurements). Conditon: As NEW condition and flawless in all aspects - nicely presented. Below... w it all began on the Nantucket Shoals (below) aboard "The Nantucket Lightships" Above is a early picture of the (second) Nantucket Lightship in 1855 & LV-112 in 1937 ... with a little history of the "Lightship Basket" also above is a photo of Nantucket Lightship LV-112 Built 1936 Aboard her "many a REAL Nantucket was made." (Pictured at Shoal 1937) A bit of History: "The first ship (Nantucket Lightship) had a rather brief tour of duty. After just 18 months at the Shoal (Nantucket South Shoals), her mooring failed and she was blown 50 miles to the west, w she went aground on Montauk Point, Long Island, New York. Nantucket's second Lightship (shown above) faired better in longevity but not in staying put. Though she served faithfully for almost 37 years, it is reported that she parted from her mooring at least 23 times while at the Shoals.... read more
