This rare Nantucket has a historic intricately done scrimshawn scene of "Old Nantucket Towne Harbour Circa 1850" (on the top / outside lid)... when Nantucket was home to some of the finest Whaling Ships (and crews) ever to sail the seas The detailed and historically correct Scrimshaw adds extra beauty and value to this wonderful piece of east coast classic tradition and history. On the inside lid is an intricately Scrimshawn portrait of "The Nantucket Lightship Resting off the North Shoals" with fluffy Island Clouds setting overhead and calm seas below. A masterpiece of Scrimshaw art ! This lovely Classic Nantucket Lightship Basket was purchased September 2005 and is dated 2005. Also shown in the Gallery above is photos of another Classic Nantucket we are parting with as well as several Americas Cup team racing yachts. As stewards of our planet, have not purchased any 20th Century ivory for any of our collections and are not selling any of our antique (pre 1900) pieces in the foreseeable future. The intricate Scrimshaw carving was done by using a very special material similar to a polymer or ivoryite (used by many scrimshanders), but is a much finer material and mirrors the characteristics of real whale ivory to a T. American Collector Family Member PayPal Preferred Nantucket Lightship Basket Historic Scrimshaw Flawless Condition This is considered a "Standard or Classic size Nantucket" at approx. 8" oval wide x 8+" high/deep and about 7.5" deep front to back (all without handle measurements). Conditon: As NEW condition and flawless in all aspects - nicely presented. Below... where it all began on the Nantucket Shoals (below) aboard "The Nantucket Lightships" Above is a early picture of the (second) Nantucket Lightship in 1855 & LV-112 in 1937 ... with a little history of the "Lightship Basket" also above are a photos of Nantucket Lightship LV-112 Built 1936 Aboard her "many a REAL Nantucket was made." (Pictured at Shoal 1937) A bit of History: "The first ship (Nantucket Lightship) had a rather brief tour of duty. After just 18 months at the Shoal (Nantucket South Shoals), her mooring failed and she was blown 50 miles to the west, where she went aground on Montauk Point, Long Island, New York. Nantucket's second Lightship (shown above) faired better in longevity but not in staying put. Though she served faithfully for almost 37 years, it is reported that she parted from her mooring at least 23 times while at the Shoals.
