Sculptue Great White by Anna Tranor 13" x 9" If you are not familiar with a "Nantucket Sleighride" , it was a term given to the "ride the giant would give the whalermen after harpooning". Shown in the picture is a Pewter and Bronze sculpture which we are also listing which depicts the famous Nantucket Sleighride in great detail. This piece is from our collection and was cast many years ago at was the famous Chilmark Foundry, Chilmark on the Island of Martha's Vineyard. The SpermWhale is carved from Porcelain, the ocean/water/base of scupture is cast in Pewter after sculpting and the intricate whalermen boats (fully detailed) as well as the whalermen with detail such that they look almost real are cast after sculpting, in Bronze. This is a truly beautiful piece and has been in our family's collection for just shy of 30 years. We've always displayed it in proximity to our extensive scrimshaw collection. Forty years later, life imitated art. Amos Smalley, an Aquinnah whaler, harpooned his own great white spermwhale, the only man who has ever done so. Describing his adventure with the great white, Amos once told a magazine reporter, "He was 90 feet long, three times the length of our boat, and he was unnatural." The Aquinnah Wampanoag in Melville's novel was called Tashtego. I have include the above as it was the Wampanoag Tribe who founded what is known today as Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard and was called Nashawahkamuk: ( Chilmark ) by the original tribe. This is a beautiful, Heirloom quality "Nantucket" offered for a very attractive price. We purchased 18 and then 6 more of this Nantucket for a wedding party and gifts some time back and we are offering the few we have left- although I have two Nantucket Lightship Baskets in my collection worth well over $2,000.00 the basket I carry and when we are on the Vineyards (Martha's Vineyard) is one identical to this!
