This is another very unique piece; "Plato de Navidad", a wonderful design done in relief style on a large well formed plate. The creamy off-white platter is suitable for a stand or to be hung on the wall. It also was made as a very limited series exclusively for Mayta Clay and signed by the artist, Dulio Jimenez; t were only 6 of these, these are the last 2. Over 11 inches in diameter with notch on back for hanging. Beautiful work! You will recive the piece pictured, t will be no substitutes or switches. San Juan de Oriente is comparable to Mata Ortiz of twenty (or more) years ago. It is a small village nestled in the hills between the volcanoes Masaya and Mombacho, and has been known for centuries for the beautiful pottery produced t Similar to the pueblo pottery of the American Southwest, the pots are handmade by the indigenous descendants of the original Indian tribes who settled the region. The Nahuatl (pronounced nah-whal) Indians first came to the pacific coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica some 5000 years ago. Their ceramic tradition can be dated back to 1000 BC. The Nahuatl Indians were contemporaries of the Olmecs, Mexico's oldest culture, but they developed their own styles and traditions. Around 1350 t is evidence of trade and influence of the Mayan culture, including ceramic motifs depicting Quetazlcoatl, the featd serpent god. T is also a long tradition of pottery manufacture for export and trade with other Indian tribes, with Nicaraguan ceramics being found in burials in Honduras and Costa Rica. Only recently have some of the families begun to supplement traditional pre-Colombian motifs for more modern forms of expression, and some of the potters are emerging as world class talents. Using coil or kick-wheel, the pieces are dried, decorated, then low-fired in beehive style adobe kilns using wood fires for fuel. The high quality designs on these pots make them unique and exceptional, comparable to the finest ceramics in all of the Americas. Many pieces are still decorated with traditional Pre-Columbian designs, while some use more modern geometric designs or motifs grounded in their close relationship with nature. Many of the pots are in the style of design they call "inciso", or incised, a traditional technique dating back at least 2500 years in Nicaragua. Some of the potters have been taught in a chain passed from mother to daughter and father to son from the time before Europeans ever set foot in the New World; others learn through apprenticeship and hard work. Many are excellent potters; some are truly gifted and talented artists who are gaining national (and international) recognition for the quality of their work.
