This is a patent ship's Log for small vessels by John Negus, of Brooklyn. This Taffrail Log was patented in August, 1892, covering an antifriction bearing for the drive and the log's swivel bearing mount. Its large dial, measuring 2” across, reads to 50, and an inset dial reads to 10. The instructions on the inside of the box read, “This little Log is designed to use on small craft, with Taffrail close to the water. . .the 50 feet line regularly supplied with this Log will give good results in small vessels, up to a speed of 9 or 10 miles . . .” (Italics theirs.) This item also includes a lead weight, the rope and a Rotator marked “NEGUS K”. The “K” indicates measurement in nautical miles, or knots. The rope appears to be original, but since I inherited this item I cannot vouch for the rope. T are directions pasted to the lid of the box, although they mention a “circular” which is not included. T are no other inscriptions on the items, other than the words “NEGUS PATENT LOG” on the front of the Log. Thomas Stewart and John D. Negus were prominent nautical instrument makers in the second half of the 1800’s. After training in England, they began manufacturing their navigational instruments in New York City in 1848. This Log was patented in 1892. They purchased the Ritchie Company in 1937, and the company was sold to the Sherman read more
