Take a look at this wonderful 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar! This co in was graded by one of the best in the business, NGC, as MS-61 with excellent details and overall wonderful eye appeal. View the pictures we took for you and see for yourself! We are sure you will like what you see! The Morgan Dollar is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, who designed the obverse and reverse of the coin and were minted from 1878 to 1904 and again for one more year in 1921. The dollar was authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. It has a fineness of .900, giving a total silver content of 0.77344 troy ounces (24.057 grams) per coin. The city of New Orleans, Louisiana has been an important commercial center since it was founded in 1718 along the banks of the Mississippi River, near the Gulf of Mexico. This fact was reinforced when the U.S. Federal Government established a branch mint there on March 3, 1835. New Orleans' strategic location along the Mississippi River made it a magnet for commercial activity. Large quantities of gold from Mexico also passed through its port annually. In the early 19th century, New Orleans, which was the fifth-largest city in the United States until the Civil War, conducted more foreign trade than any other city in the nation. The New Orleans Mint produced both gold and silver coins, which arguably marked it as the most important branch mint in the country. It produced many different denominations of coins in its first tour of duty, all of which were either silver or gold: silver three-cent pieces, half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, silver dollars, gold dollars, $2.50 quarter eagles, three-dollar pieces, $5 half-eagles, $10 eagles, $20 double eagles, and, of course, Morgan dollars. This coin will make an excellent addition to any Morgan collection and a great investment for the future.
