Product Description: This offering is for a new-old-stock (NOS) Suntour Winner Pro Ultra 6-speed freewheel (Model WP-6500) that includes a 14-15-16-17-18-19 cluster. Date coding indicates an 80's vintage, which makes some sense, as it was during this period that Suntour sales peaked, so their production runs were probably at their highest levels (which possibly helps to explain why we were able to locate such stocks 20+ years later). The Winner Pro model, in particular, was Suntour's top-of-the-line offering in freewheels and arguably the best freewheel ever made from any era. Similar to other Suntour freewheel models, the body is forged steel with ground ball (bearing) races for added precision and reduced rolling resistance. The sprockets are also made of a high grade steel with Suntour's trusted beveled tooth design, which provides for better and more reliable shifting relative to their European counterparts from this era. Add to all of this the improved sealing mechanism Suntour designed specifically for their Winner Pro model, and t would appear to be adequate support for the best-in-class argument. In terms of compatibility, this is a freewheel, so it will only work with a threaded rear hub (as opposed to the newer splined freehubs that are more common today). The threading is English/ISO, so it's 1.37" x 24 tpi (threads per inch), which was probably as close to a standard as t was during this period...so fairly common threading to say the least. Although, we should also note that Italian threaded rear hubs are close enough to these specs that it's possible to thread an English/ISO spec'd freewheel on an Italian threaded rear hub. The only caveat is to avoid switching back and forth between English/ISO and Italian threaded freewheels, as t is still enough of a thread-pattern difference to prematurely wear-out/damage rear hub threading if this (switching back and forth) practice is employed. Having said this, we see so few Italian threaded freewheels on the market that this discussion is probably a moot point (as English/ISO threaded freewheels are the only models that appear readily available). Additionally, because this is an Ultra 6-speed freewheel, Suntour intended it to be used on a rear hub with locknut-to-locknut dimensions of 120 mm (which has historically been considered the spacing for a standard 5-speed wheel). However, Suntour used narrower spacers to achieve the same freewheel width (as a 5-speed), which allowed for the additional (sixth) sprocket or gear. An Ultra freewheel may require a narrower chain to achieve proper shifting, but this is really the only change necessary on a vintage friction-based drivetrain. In terms of condition, all of our Suntour freewheels (unless otherwise noted) are new and in their original box...although some of the boxes are shopworn. The boxes aside, we cannot believe anybody will be disappointed with the condition of the freewheels. A brief word about Suntour and their freewheel... Like so many of the Suntour components, t was a period of time during the 70's and into the 80's w Suntour was arguably producing some of the finest bicycle components in the industry. Their freewheels were no exception...and even as late as the very early 90's, we have read or been told by respected sources that Suntour index (or AccuShift / AccuShift Plus) technology was on par with Shimano's index (or SIS) technology...but by this time Shimano was so firmly entrenched and so much stronger financially (for a number of different reasons), that Suntour was unable to recover lost market share, which led to it's ultimate demise.
