Originally issued in 1978 on the Brain label. This digi-pak edition issued in 2007. Remastered from the original analog tapes. Comes with a 12-page informative/photo insert booklet (English/German). Also includes a 4-panel full color catalog of other Brain label reissues by SPV. MEMBERS: Lutz Rahn, Hartwig Biereichel, Fred Muhlbock, Heino Schunzel, and Detlev Job. DESCRIPTION: Novalis was formed in the Autumn of 1971 in Hamburg ; their name was the nom de plume of Karl Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772-1801), the most influential German poet of the early romantic era. Founding members were singer Jürgen Wenzel, organist Lutz Rahn, bass player Heino Schünzel and drummer Hartwig Biereichel. In March 1972, the band played at a festival in Hamburg 's Fabrik to an audience of almost 2,000 people. Among them was producer Jochen Petersen, who immediately got the band a record deal with German progressive rock label Brain, a division of Metronome Records; now part of Universal Music. Their music, at first, was a heavy organ based style of progressive rock with romantically delivered lyrics. As time proceeded, Novalis developed their own unique style, a mixture of progressive, classic, folk, and rock, but the romantic, somewhat theatrical lyrics, remained a trademark of their sound. Vielleicht Bist Du Ein Clown , issued in 1978, was their sixth album, preceeded by the concept album Brandung , issued in 1977. One could hear changes on the horizon for Novalis with this one; more tracks with shorter running times. No Hardenberg interpretations this time round (The somber, Mellotron-laden album-closer Die Welt Wird Alt Und Wieder Jung , however, was based on Friedrich Schiller's poem Höffnung ), and Manchmal Fällt Der Regen Eben Lang was reminiscent of the work of Kansas . The album's "epic" centerpiece, Vielleicht Bin Ich Ein Clown , is a bit melodramatic and perhaps lacking the edge of inventiveness of some of their other work. On the plus side, Detlef Job's composition Der Geigenspieler (a song about a street violinist, featuring a guest spot by Walter Quintus, ex-Parzival, on violin) is lively and varied, as are the two evocative instrumentals. Zingaresca features some of the strongest dual-guitar work since Wer Schmetterlinge Lachen Hört , and City-Nord allows Rahn to toy effectively with various keyboard sounds and textures. Not an essential work, but fans will certainly want to add this pristine remastered edition to their collection. The cover art, which was the first thing about this album to draw my attention, was produced by the UK design company Hipgnosis.
