Hello friends, This knife is a Davis Brothers hand forged, traditional, craft made knife. Made right here on the Northwest coast of Washington. It is an extra large, long bladed, bent version of our traditional NW Coast style crook knife. The blade has an in-swept curve on one side to produce a scorp like cut with a pulling stroke ,(in this case for a left hander to pull to the right), and is out-swept on the other side for the pushing or pulling stroke of the A, (shallow), bend crook knife in the other direction. The in-swept side excels at stock removal, and can be used for creation of inside curves, while the out-swept side excels at final shaving of inside curves, and lowering to ground, but will also do heavy stock removal . Because the tip comes to a fine point the knife can clean up detail work on moderate to large work pieces when used in either direction. Edge bevels have been kept to the topside of the blade for the most aggressive cutting action. We have made the handle big enough for strong two handed work, but when held in close, one hand will do. These knives are typically only found in the tool kits of accomplished carvers who either forge their own knives or know a smith who will do custom work. However, we are not your typical knife shop. My brother and I are woodcarving artists, and long ago learned to forge and make our own tools. We have made knives for friends, family, and acquaintances for years and are now offering them here. Our e-bay store offers knives of this particular type,( as well as many others), in both shallow and deep bends and made for both right and left hand use. This knife is 9 1/2" long with a 2 3/4" blade that is 3/4 " wide at the tang. It was made in our shop, using 1095 high carbon steel, forged, bent, and ground to shape. It was then tempered and sharpened to produce an edge that is both durable and extremely sharp. For the best carving performance, when sharpening these tools it is important to leave the back side of the blade absolutely flat (no bevel on the back side). The blade is set with epoxy, and reinforced with a traditional seine twine winding saturated with cyanocrylate. The handle is made from Wild Cherry Wood. A beautiful, strong, yet lightweight wood which is not only traditional, but keeps the weight of this large knife down to 3 oz. It is finished with coats of Tung Oil. A working carver's traditional, craft made tool. It will inspire fine work! My brother and I have been carvers for over 25 years. The traditional knives we make and use are based on designs used by native Northwest carvers for hundreds of years. Using crooked knives they produced both monumental sculptures and finely detailed household items of stunning beauty and sophistication.
