This heavy old "pie plate" style railroad police six point star badge is from the defunct New York Central Lines which was organized in 1853 and had grown to a 1695 mile railway by the time it became a part of the Penn Central Railroad in 1966.. More of its storied historical development can be found on Wikipedia on the 'net if interested. This badge typical of the style badge popular in the 1920s when heavy, large and durable badges were selected fro many railroads and regular police agencies in the Midwest and particularly the Chicago area. This one measures 3 1/4 inches between the opposite points and weighs about three ounces. Hallmarked by C .H Hanson Co. Chicago it has a heavy saddle pin with cover plate on the back. It reflects heavy use andlong time service evidence on both the front and back surfaces. The copper numbers 594, the Illinois State Seal and the banner title on the front of the badge are affixed/soldered to the face - reflecting wear and tarnish in spots. In short, this badge is a highly desirable collectors item from a long gone era which, because of its charisma and attractiveness, will make it a center piece of any collection it would be displayed in!
